Photo Flurry 120 – Electric Fun at Maker Faire 2013
Maker Faire is one of the very few Bay Area events that I’ve actually manged to attend since moving here six months ago. It was a lot less conference-centric than I had hoped, but as far as fairs go, it was great. Exhibitors were all super-friendly and genuinely loved talking about their goods, plus I got to catch up with friends, so – whee! And of course I couldn’t resist taking a few pictures amidst all the clamorous excitement, though experiencing definitely took precedence over documenting – there was just so much to marvel at.

Tesla coils + electric guitar = amazing.

Children dancing whilst being zapped inside a Faraday cage, thus safe.

We all took turns getting zapped by the loveliest of mad scientists grasping a Van de Graaph generator, which produced roughly a million volts, but with a very low current.

I don’t know who this kid was, but his expressions were the best.

My sweet new ride.

Tiny drones

This was actually quite impressive – all the fish and lobsters danced (and sang) in synch!

The charred remains of a piano.

Ran into Mitch near the giant MouseTrap.

Manually-operated, salivating cunnilingus machine?

This massive wolf sculpture spat fire via remote. I got to push the button.

Gašper remembered he can’t play piano, but did get to play a guitar that used empty oil drums as amps.

Possibly swans roaming a desolate stretch of lawn on our way back.

Review: Star Trek Into Darkness Originally published at Nyx Goldstone. You can comment here or there. Only by the farthest stretch of the imagination am I a Trekkie. I haven’t even gotten through the original series. So, when I saw and fell in love with J. J. Abrams’ Star Trek, it was based solely on the merit of the movie itself. That’s right. I said it. I like Abrams’ work just because I liked it!
Ah… Anyway…
When I walked out of the cinema this afternoon having just watched Star Trek: Into Darkness (which, by the way, I don’t get the sub-title), I was torn. I felt “meh” about it. I walked out fully aware I won’t be pulling all day repeat screenings at the dollar cinema in a month. Here’s the biggest problem I had: too many inside references.
Now, because I don’t live under a rock, I did understand a lot of them. I even caught some of the really clever role-reversal ones. That still doesn’t change I hadn’t seen the original material, so half the time I couldn’t bring myself to really care. What I loved about the first Abrams Star Trek movie was it was a really good reboot. I didn’t need to know the series because what happened before mattered, but didn’t matter. Then suddenly this sequel comes along and I needed to know!
Overall, the story was decent. It didn’t draw me in, though. I didn’t lean forward in my seat, and that wasn’t because I was sandwiched between two people I didn’t know all that well. I didn’t find myself searching the screen for every detail. I don’t think I even remember much about it besides the funniest scenes.
All in all, my original statement of it was “meh” seems to cover it quite well. As a newbie to the fandom, between the lackluster story and the outcry from friends who are Trekkies about how things and characters were “ruined” (which is something else I don’t see), the magic that was in the first movie wasn’t there in this one.

Inkdrops 029 – Alkonost Tattoo Commission

Click image to see her bigger.
Alkonost || Tattoo design* for Claire
This was incredibly fun to work on. Little-known fact: I drew another graphite Alkonost a few years ago for an unrealized project – it was never posted anywhere because… Well, it sucked. Having a second chance to explore the theme of one of my favorite Russian mythological creatures was pure redemption and delight – I actually want to draw more of these now, but have to work on other projects for the moment. Vasnetsov’s classic depiction of the feathered beast and her dark counterpart was part of my inspiration here and, per Claire’s instruction, I incorporated a subtly Mayan motif into the kokoshnik headdress and necklace. The original drawing will be available for purchase soon.
To commission a tattoo design, email me at zoetica (boop) gmail (beep) com for a quote.
*This is an original tattoo design created for Claire; she owns the skin rights, I own the art rights. Please respect the art and its owners.

Venice Biennale 2013 Tip 1. Before you go, call your cellphone provider, buy an international data plan, and make sure they take off the block on international roaming. If you don’t have a cellphone with a map, I recommend you get one before your trip. Then download the Venice Biennale ap from Christies for free. Zoom in on all the spots of the map before you go; the map will then be stored in memory for your trip.
Keep your phone on "airplane mode" except when you're using the map to navigate and when you're making calls, to minimize roaming charges. Brutal Critiques I am looking for brutal applied art critique. My students are going to be animators so an animation or game art industry brutal critique would be fantastic. In my own class I use the standard Feldman 4-part critique outline and usually leave out the evaluation part until later in the term so students can get used to the other 3 parts: close observation, analysis, and interpretation.
Strangely enough I've found several places that SELL brutal critiques and a number of students who request them. I think I will offer an out of class brutal critique option as extra credit for students who want one - inside or outside of class is the question. My students can be their own worst critic so my job is to build confidence and skills so that LATER they can withstand a brutal critique and reply with professional design knowledge and the ability to learn and adapt quickly.
I think brutal critiques can range from helpful, to political, to power mongering, and like Brian Sewell as a professional critic one just MUST show one's expertise to the max. There are probably many more reasons to give a brutal critique.
If you happen across other places to find brutal critiques please contact me at honoriastarbuck.com.

A show about Bromances? Well, then. Clearly, I had to do Sherlock Holmes + John Watson. And (sorry, RDJ stans) BBC's Sherlock is clearly the best iteration.
